Electrical engineers are responsible for designing, developing, testing or supervising the manufacturing and installation of electrical equipment, components or systems for commercial, industrial, military or scientific use.

According to the Colorado Department of Labor & Employment, electrical engineers are considered to be an in demand occupation. Five of the related occupations – including engineering managers, aerospace engineers, electronics engineers, mechanical engineers and electricians – also are considered to be in demand.

During 2008, the median wage for electrical engineers in the Denver-Aurora area was $39.07 per hour, or $81,263 per year. Throughout Colorado as a whole, the median wage for electrical engineers during 2008 was $38.66 per hour, or $80,420 per year.

    The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there were a total of 1.6 million engineers during 2008. Electrical engineers accounted for 157,800 of those positions. Employment in the industry as a whole is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations during the next 10 years.

    Overall, engineering employment is expected to increase by 11 percent from 2008 to 2018. While biomedical engineers will see the fastest growth in employment, civil engineers will experience the largest employment increase.
