Here’s an extreme example of how an employer can be left holding the bag for some of its managers’ thoughtless actions.

According to nj.com, New Jersey Transit has agreed to pay seven Africa-American workers a total $3.65M to settle a race discrimination lawsuit.

The website said the workers claimed a former supervisor used the “N-word” and put a makeshift noose around one worker’s neck while saying, “This is how things were handled in the South.”

The workers also accused managers at the state transportation authority of treating and paying them less than their white co-workers.

Per the website, the settlement was approved by NJ Transit officials last week. It has yet to receive final approval from the state, which paid a politically connected law firm more than $1.5 million to handle the case.
