A new effort is underway that could create hundreds of Peoria jobs and strengthen the local healthcare industry.

Officials with the City of Peoria are currently in talks to develop a medical-device incubator. Opening an incubator would help to better develop the city’s healthcare industry and create more high-paying, high-tech jobs.

According to an article by The Arizona Republic, the incubator would mainly be responsible for helping companies develop their ideas into practical products and solutions, assisting with everything from the patent process to accounting.

There are already four incubators operating in the greater Phoenix area. A new incubator in Peoria would ideally attract more medical device and supply chain manufacturing companies to the city.

The Peoria Economic Develop Advisory Board has already given city officials permission to further develop plans for an incubator, and if completed in time, those plans could be presented to the City Council sometime this month.

Phoenix-based BioAccel would be a likely candidate to run the incubator. The organization, which has a strong relationship with the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health focuses on recruiting bioscience companies and advancing technology through commercialization.

In addition to leasing costs, the city would initially pay BioAccel to run the incubator if the plan is approved. How the incubator operates will ultimately be decided by the City Council, but it would most likely include a an appointed board of managers and an advisory board with representatives from research and academic institutions.
