recruiting nightmares

Recruiting is no walk in the park — especially when you’re dealing with people like this.

Here are eight of the weirdest recruiting stories we’ve ever heard, courtesy of our friends at the PBP Employment blog. (For even more crazy recruiting stories, check out their story “Recruiting horror stories: 15 bizarre real-life tales.”

  • A recruiting manager hired what he thought was a construction project manager for a firm specializing in buildings designed for assembling and containing explosives. But within the first month, the new hire purchased a new wardrobe on the newly issued company Visa — and left explosives on the side of the road in the middle of a town while denying the whole thing.
  • A candidate asked the interviewer when was he going to retire because he wanted his job.
  • A Fortune 500 CEO was asked what held his company back, what was the worst financial disaster at his company and how much it cost over his tenure. The CEO said his company lost $100 million due to bad hires during his term as CEO. Surprise — he wasn’t hired.
  • One recruiting manager at a temp recruiting agency had a guy show up in flip flops, a backwards hat and chewing gum with his cell phone out. After about 30 seconds, the manager told the guy to put his phone away, spit out the gum, take his hat off and sit up in the chair. He gave me a blank stare and the recruiting manager asked the guy why he was in his office. The guy said his friend needed a job so he came along with him. The manager told the guy to get out of his office and stop wasting his time.
  • The recruitment team at another company invested a huge amount of time and resources into hiring a new director. He went through joining formalities on the day of joining — and then never turned up again.
  • A recruiting manager made an offer to a candidate who moved from the East Coast to the Midwest to take the position.  Once she moved to the area, he established her start date for one week out. On the day she was supposed to start, she didn’t show up. She waited until the end of the day to call the office number to tell the manager that she’d accepted a position in the field of her graduate studies.
  • A company brought in a male sales candidate into the office to make an offer in person. After the applicant accepted the offer, he gave the female recruiting manager a strange pat on the back which lasted a little too long. The supervisor thought, “This was a mistake, but it’s too late now.” During the six months he was employed with the company, he gave many back rubs to other people, and did it to both males and females. Eventually the manager had to ask the employee to stop.
  • A recruiting manager hired a senior manager with a great education and solid work experience. One month into the job, he was found sleeping under a conference table. When questioned, he said he wasn’t feeling good and that it was a bad call on his part – he should have gone out to his car to sleep. A couple months later he was caught stealing a baseball hat from the company warehouse.
