Nuclear medicine technologists give radiopharmaceuticals – atoms that spontaneously admit radiation – to patients undergoing procedures to identify various diseases. They operate cameras that detect and map radiation in a patient’s body and create diagnostic images.

The amount of education required to become a nuclear medicine technologist can range from one to four years depending on the student’s prior education level and experience. In addition, many states require nuclear medicine technologists to become licensed before they can begin working.

There were about 21,800 nuclear medicine technologists throughout the nation during 2008, and that number is expected to grow by 16 percent by 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

About 66 percent of employees work in public and private hospitals, while others work in physicians offices or medical and diagnostic laboratories.

The average wage for nuclear medicine technologists in the Denver area during 2009 was $38.20 per hour or $79,461 per year, while the average entry-level wage was $32.98 per hour or $68,605 per year, and the average experienced-level wage was $42.15 per hour or $87,681 per year.
