One solar-focused company is creating Phoenix manufacturing jobs (Click here).

Suntech Power Holdings recently announced its plans to open the company’s first solar panel production facility in Goodyear, a nearby suburb of Phoenix. Suntech manufactures solar panels for industrial, commercial, residential, and utility uses.

The majority of jobs in the solar industry are in finance, sales, and installation sections. Suntech predicts that it will need anywhere from 15 to 30 people for each megawatt of production capacity the new facility generates.

The company will initially hire about 75 workers, allowing the facility to produce 30 megawatts worth of solar modules during its first year of operation. It hopes to increase that number to about 150 employees by the end of 2011 in an effort to produce 50 megawatts worth of solar modules.

Officials say Suntech chose Goodyear for the location of its new facility because of the city’s encouraging business environment, renewable energy policies, available logistics, and low set-up costs. The company also plans to begin a research alliance with Arizona State University.

Workers at the new facility will manufacture Suntech’s 280W Vd-series modules, which are designed to meet project requirements set by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and will mainly be used by commercial and utility-generating companies.
